Some breeders prefer or at times need to help there females deliver there babies, during whelping/queening you may notice that the puppy/kitten is still gasping, even after it has been rubbed up, all fluid has taken from airways and dried. This may actually be due to the fact that the umbical cord is still bleeding, to give your neonate a fighting chance the cord will need to be tied off or clamped. If you are on your own or you get one of these bleeders or you have another puppy/kitten on route you may find it easier to use the cord clamps as it is much quicker and simpler than trying to tie off the cord as quite fidly and can be time consuming. We clamp off the cords in this situantion giving us time to concentrate on the next new arrival. We have used the cord clamps many times on our own puppies and we remove the clamp as soon as we feel cord has stopped bleeding which is usually within the hour (normally around 20 minutes) n - We do not put with mum while the clamp is on, so she does not pull at the clamp while cleaning. If you are unsure whether the cord has stopped bleeding but you have time you can tie the cord just below clamp then remove.
