Previous multimode fibres are optimised for an optical window or a wavelength range of 850 nm. Outside this window, the signals are greatly attenuated, so Ethernet signals must be transmitted over multiple multimode fibers connected in parallel. For example, for 10-Gigabit Ethernet two fibers are required (one fiber for transmission = transmit, one for receiving = receive). For 40 or 100 Gigabit Ethernet applications, the signals are split across eight fibers (2x four fibers with 10 or 25 gigabit/s) or 20 fibers (2x ten fibers with 10 gigabit/s). The OM5 technology therefore uses a broadband optimised multimode fibre (WBMMF) (Wideband Multimode Fiber WBMMF). In conjunction with SWDM (Short Wave Division Multiplexing) technology, a wider optical window can be used. Therefore, four different wavelengths from 850 nm to 950 nm can be used. Each individual wavelength can work at data rates of 25 Gbps. Thus, the number of fibres is reduced by four times compared to OM4. Instead of more elaborate multi-fibre connectors such as the MPO plug, simpler and more cost-effective fiber duplex plugs can be used. Compatibility: the OM5 fibre optic patch cables from Good Connections are fully backwards compatible with previous versions (OM2, OM3 and OM4). So one can easily integrate into existing installations.
