Among the elementary gods worshiped in ancient Greece was Gaia (Greek = The Earth). Gaia was the first being to emerge from primeval chaos and at the same time was the mother of Uranus (heaven), Pontos (sea) and Ourea (mountains). The Greeks believed that the first people emerged from the earth and the first gods from Gaia. Their fertility feeds from the soil, the foundation of life. In her lap she carries the earth and reflects all life, maternity, physicality and fertility. The lotus seat in which Gaia is depicted here embodies the lotus flower. It strives from the earth upwards to the all-encompassing energy of the sun. The lotus seat also gives the earth nut Gaia a firm upright hold to receive the all-encompassing positive energy of the universe and let it flow freely into it. "Panta Rei" = everything flows.
