The investigation leads to suspicion of students from a nearby college until a man pleads guilty and is convicted. Twenty years later, the case ends up on the desk of Detective Carl Mørck, who quickly realizes something is wrong. Together with colleague and friend Assad, Carl begins to investigate the story again and, finding an old emergency call from a desperate girl, realizes that she seems to know what happened then.
