The Nicholson Half Round Hand File has double American pattern teeth on both the round and flat sides for use on curved and flat surfaces. The double teeth ensure quick material removal. The spigot can be used with an optional handle for a secure grip (sold separately). Hand files are used to remove material and smooth and shape workpieces. They have forward-facing incisors and cut either over a stationary or rotating workpiece when pushing. Single serration with single row bevel cut teeth across the width of the file. Double cut teeth have two rows in opposite directions. American pattern files have three degrees of coarse. Coarse, also known as bastard grinding, is suitable for efficient, heavy material removal where surface is not a problem. Medium, also known as a second cut, provides average material removal and build quality. Fine, also known as Smooth Cut, provides the smoothest surface. Swiss pattern files have eight coarseness classes ranging from 00 (coarse), 0 (medium) and 1 to 6 (fine to finest), providing a smoother, more precise finish than comparable American pattern files.
