A Legend of Steel Power The M1 Abrams tank is an icon of American engineering. Production began in 1980 and the vehicle was named after General Creighton Abrams, commander of the 37th Armored Battalion. During World War II and later as the leader of the US forces in Vietnam. It was designed to fight the armored forces of the Soviet Union, although its combat use was primarily in the Middle East. The first version had a 105 mm gun, and from 1985, the M1A1 with a 120 mm gun was produced.
