The Short Stirling was the first British heavy bomber to enter service during World War II. The Stirling design was characterised by its high wing, the four motors and the cabin elevated to the fuselage. The structure of the aircraft was all metal. Another feature of the Stirling was the large landing gear. The first Stirling Mk I went to equip the R.A.F. Bomber Command departments. Since the end of 1940, the first operational mission against industrial installations in Rotterdam was carried out in 1941. The Stirling had the ability to carry a significant offensive load of over 6kg of bombs and was armed with 8 7.7mm machine guns for defense.
