The Douglas SBD low-wing single-engine "Dauntless" was the most used on-board dive bomber by the U.S. Navy during World War II. Entered active service in American flight services during 1941, it could be used for both reconnaissance and strike attack. SBD-3 was the true hero of the Battle of the Midway (June 1942), the turning point of the war in the Pacific, where it contributed significantly to the sinking of Japanese carriers. Featuring a Wright R-1820 Cyclone radial engine, it could reach the maximum speed of 410 km/h. The SBD-3 could carry nearly 2000 kg of bombs. It was also equipped with two 12.7 mm front and two 7.62 mm rear machine guns. It was particularly appreciated by the crews for its robustness and constructive solidity.
