Sobek was considered the god of water, riverside and swamps. The Nile is said to have emerged from its sweat and it was considered a trigger for the fertile Nile floods. But he was also feared, because people were afraid to breathe their lives in his fangs. But it was precisely this danger and the strength of a crocodile that fit well with the royalty and so pharaohs of the 13th and 17th centuries took place. Dynasty the name Sobek in their throne name (e.g. Sobekhotep="Sobek is satisfied"). A famous statue from the Luxor Museum features Pharaoh Amenhotep III. next to the crocodile god. The Ptolemies also revered him as their ancestor. Sobek is usually depicted as a crocodile (often sitting on a shrine) or as a human with a crocodile head. He can wear a three-part wig and/or a crown with horns, sun disc and high feathers. As a god of fertility, he was associated with Osiris. In the Middle Kingdom, Sobek's reputation rose so high that he was associated with the sun god Ra and later with Amun. The Greeks put him equal to their sun god Helios. In many places of Egypt, sanctuaries of the God were found, including in Crocodilopolis in the oasis of Faijum and in Kom Ombo in Upper Egypt. The crocodiles of the Sobek held there were embalmed and solemnly buried after their death.
