Arches for Oil is a mould-made, 300 gsm paper (140lb), composed of 100% cotton fibres. The remarkably robust surface permits a full range of painting techniques, even including masking. It has a natural textured surface offering a quality very similar to a stretched canvas but with a better ease and convenience. Indeed, Arches for Oil does not require any preparatory work (there is no need to gesso, no need for any added sizing). It has a semi-absorbent surface allowing paint drying times to be slightly faster than on many other painting supports. The paper’s formulation, specifically designed for oil painting, allows no danger of oxidation of the paper fibres, and the pigment remains on the paper’s surface, without “sinking in” and without producing any oily “halos” surrounding the colour.
