The office of Lord Mayor of London began in 1189 with the election of Henry Fitz-Ailwyn. King John officially recognised the people's right to elect their Lord Mayor, but he required that an oath of allegiance to the Crown be sworn by each newly-elected Mayor. The oath swearing tradition continues to this day.
